McCarthy lands contract to build two schools in Forsyth County, GA
Haw Creek Elementary, Lakeside Middle schools set to open in 2009-10 school year
ATLANTA (August 20, 2007) – The Forsyth County School Board has selected the Atlanta office of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., (http://www.mccarthy.com/), to build two schools in growing Forsyth County. The contract for Haw Creek Elementary School and Lakeside Middle School totals $41,651,950.
Serving more than 30,000 students, Forsyth County expects to add approximately 2,000 students a year. Currently, the district is home to 30 schools, but 15 additional new schools are needed between 2009 and 2013, bringing the projected enrollment to more than 50,000 students.
“McCarthy’s team brings a lot of enthusiasm and knowledge about school construction to these projects,” said Robert Sewell, chief facilities and operations director of Forsyth County Schools. “The district is happy to begin its relationship with McCarthy and is confident that Haw Creek Elementary and Lakeside Middle, like all of our schools, will be attractive, safe buildings where students will be excited to learn and teachers excited to teach.”
Ranked nationally as the eighth largest K-12 education builder (Building Design & Construction, July 2007), McCarthy has built more than 300 K-12 schools across the country. The company also has extensive higher education experience, and the Atlanta office is currently scheduled to build a major research laboratory at Georgia State University.
“Our team is truly excited to bring McCarthy’s nationwide education experience and best practices to work for the Forsyth County School Board and the parents, teachers, and students that the district serves,” said Kevin Kuntz, executive vice president of McCarthy and head of McCarthy’s Atlanta office
When it opens in August 2009, Haw Creek Elementary, at 145,000 square feet, will have a capacity of 1,112 students and a projected opening enrollment of 870 students. Lakeside Middle, at 142,000 square feet, will have a capacity of 1,037 students and a projected opening enrollment of 879. Construction for both schools is funded by 2006 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST)/Bond referendum, which was approved by 73% of Forsyth County voters.
The project architect is James W. Buckley & Associates in Albany.
