Energy Management and Emerging Trends
By Nick Stecky, C.E.M., LEED, President, NJS Associates, LLC
Emerging trend such as Commissioning can be nothing more than good old fashioned Operations and Maintenance Management. Districts have demonstrated saving 10% to 30% by simply managing their operations better and turning things off with little to no capital investment. Two LEED Rating Systems applicable to schools are for New Construction and Existing Buildings. This article will focus on the first “E” in LEED, the Energy E with a focus on existing facilities’ operations.

Back to School on Direct Digital Control of Renewable Energy
By Jack Mc Gowan, C.E.M., President, Energy Control, Inc.
This article includes an award winning school project that blends renewable energy and energy efficiency, as well as creative financing. It is a great example of how schools can get projects completed even when funding is limited. Read how Alamogordo Public Schools has taken a strategic approach to energy and environmental management with impressive results. The initial phase implemented $2.4 million in technology and generated dramatic savings. Annual savings are 1,245,472 kWh of electricity in a service territory with a blended cost per kilowatt-hour of $0.14. By eliminating evaporative cooling in parts of the high school they will also save over 4 million gallons of water per year.

Energy Benchmarking: Does Your School Get a Passing Grade?

One of the best ways to determine whether a school is using energy efficiently is to compare its performance to that of similar buildings—a process known as benchmarking. This easy benchmarking process created through PIER research can be applied to any school district facility. Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology created the system in cooperation with the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) and Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E).
