When Sherlock Holmes responded to Dr. Watson with the comment, “Elementary, my dear Watson, elementary,” I’m sure he had no idea that he was really speaking about the introduction of integrated curriculum and technology into a K-12 educational program and the creation of Small Learning Communities. Inherently, Holmes knew the fundamentals of deduction as a holistic learning system that must rely on all of an individual’s learning modalities and senses to be successful. In short, he was the perfect elementary student. This is what Holmes did repeatedly because he understood life, himself, and learning in a personally relevant way.

This article is the second in a five-article series that will demonstrate the critical role that integrated elementary education plays in creating a strong learning foundation for a well-developed K-12 educational program. For integrated learning and small learning communities to be successful at the high school level, it is essential that they be built upon a strong foundation in the elementary grades. There are numerous reasons why multi-modal education, or what may be referred to as “teaching to multiple intelligences,” is essential to creating a positive attitude towards learning and why it is necessary as early as possible in the educational process.
