Not Disposable After All

Pennsylvania - North Penn School District is saving $35,000 a year by reusing plastic utensils for an entire school year. Parents complained that the utensils are all bitten up by the end of the year. They don't understand why the district did not invest in metal cutlery or throw away the plastic utensils that are meant to be disposable and not reusable.  Parents had concerns that the plastic cutlery was not being cleaned well enough, and can be breaking down because it will not be sturdy enough being washed so many times. District business manager, Mike Frist says that the cutlery they are using can withstand temperatures up to 235 degrees Fahrenheit. The Montgomery County Department of Heath says they can reuse plastic cutlery as long as it meets safety conditions. These include, withstanding at least 200 degrees Fahrenheit, repeat washing without cracking, breaking, chipping or creasing. They must also be nontoxic and nonporous. However, after repeated complaints from parents, the 18 schools reusing plastic utensils will end. Students will be issued new sets each time.
