BOMI Restoration of Confidence
By: Malcolm Forbes - Tuesday, June 9, 2009
Source: Bomi International
We read about it in the newspaper. We hear about it on television and by the water cooler at work. Commercial real estate values are falling, and the credit crunch is deflating asset values. Home foreclosures have increased to 1 out of every 466 households, leading to a lack of confidence in the bond markets, which remain down. Stocks and consumer spending are down, and energy costs are up. Losses across the board, little to no lending activity, and decreasing liquidity have all resulted in a disastrous loss of 11.6 million jobs, further cutting the demand for commercial space. Asset values decline as fear and the absence of confidence continue to spiral our economy downward. Where do we find restoration?

Reservation Schools Look at Creative Funding Possibilities
By: Staff - Monday, November 20, 2006

Montana schools on or near Indian reservations face a unique problem.  Reservation land is, for the most part, not subject to the kind of taxes that support other schools in the state.  The result is schools that need to fundraise just to stay afloat.

“Big Green” Ottoville Schools’ geoexchange HVAC system
By: Mary K. Jones - Monday, October 30, 2006

Nicknamed “The Big Green” years ago for the color of their uniforms, Ottoville Local School District, Ohio, can boast of another big, green achievement.  The new K-12 building, which opened in September 2003, features an energy-efficient geoexchange system for heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC).  This system, which relies on the earth’s stable temperature for its energy-efficiency, not only saves the school district significant energy costs.  It also influenced the standards of the Ohio School Facilities Commission and has convinced other schools to use similar HVAC systems that are efficient and cost-effective.

Emergency Planning for a Pandemic: Bird Flu
By: Patty Ardavin, SchoolFacilities.com - Tuesday, March 28, 2006

D.C. - School officials are being told to prepare for a possible bird flu outbreak. Federal health leaders don't think it is being alarmist or premature for schools to be prepared. The government would like the coordination among local, state and federal officials in case of an outbreak. They have created a checklist to prepare as well as response steps for preschools, grade schools, high schools and colleges. Some of the tougher steps would be communicating with the students. Since an outbreak would shut down schools for probably a month or longer to be effective, school officials in Massachusetts are looking into utilizing an automated phone system so parents can be kept updated and students can be assigned homework. Another idea would be to have teachers and students communicate through the Internet. Tom Scott, executive director of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents said, "I don't think we're anywhere near having a systemic way of approaching this." Budget cuts in technology might limit these types of plans, he continued to say.

New Hampshire - Superior Court Judge William Groff said that the 2005 law, which was intended to address prior rulings, unfairly allows property-rich communities to keep and spend far more money on their schools than poorer communities.
